The Burlington Skyway bridge on the QEW spans the Burlington canal which provides access into the bay and the Hamilton harbour. The original bridge (the metal one on the right) was erected in 1958 and accommodated 4 lanes. To alleviate the congestion due to the heavy traffic flow the 2nd bridge was opened in 1985 providing an additional 4 lanes with the old bridge handling the eastbound traffic and the new bridge handling the westbound traffic.
The QEW is one of the most heavily travelled roadways in the GTA and on occasion the bridge is closed due to high winds. It does not occur often but when it does mayhem ensues as there is no viable alternative. One can use the old lift bridge but to access it you must exit the QEW and take secondary roads which simply can't handle the volume.
