L'actuel château de Valençay fut construit à l'emplacement d'un ancien château féodal.
Il s'agit d'un des plus beau monument de la Renaissance. En 1770, l'aile nord est supprimée, l'aile ouest est embellie, et la toiture est remodelée à la "Mansard".
Le château fut acquis par Talleyrand en 1803.
Né le 2 février 1754, Talleyrand est issu de la vieille noblesse. Son pied bot lui interdisant la carrière des armes, il fut donc déchu de son droit d'aînesse et embrassa la prêtrise. Il devint évêque d'Autun en 1788.
En 1789, il propose la sécularisation des biens du clergé pour soulager les finances.
Il devint ministre des relations extérieures.
Il est aux côtés de Bonaparte lors du coup d'état du 18 Brumaire.
Talleyrand avait de grands projets pour la France. Cependant, convaincu de l'impossibilité d'une extension à l'intérieur de l'Europe sans provoquer des conflits en chaîne, il tourna les yeux vers le sud de la Méditerranée.
Il obtint de Napoléon d'envoyer une mission d'espionnage pour reconnaître un possible lieu d'accostage pour le débarquement d'une armée de terre contre Alger. Sidi-Ferruch est retenu.
Talleyrand travailla a envenimer un vieux différend (sur du blé non payé par la France) entre Paris et Alger.
En 1827, à la suite d'une violente dispute, le consul de France à Alger, Pierre Deval, est frappé, d'un coup de chasse-mouche, par le Dey d'Alger.
Le 14 juin 1830, les troupes françaises débarquent à Sidi-Ferruch.
le 4 novembre 1830, s'ouvre entre les principales puissances européennes la conférence de Londres. En échange de l'abandon des prétentions de la France sur le territoire belge Talleyrand obtient la reconnaissance tacite de la souveraineté française sur l'Algérie.

November 4, 1830, opens between the major European powers the London conference. In exchange for the abandonment of claims of France on Belgian territory Talleyrand gives tacit recognition of French sovereignty in Algeria.
