This profile was photographed in Sri Lanka. The soil is formed on fragmented limestone on a five percent slope under tropical savanna vegetation. The site is well drained and has an udic soil moisture regime. The mollic epipedon (A horizon) averages about 30 cm thick and rests on limestone rocks. Several rocks are exposed on the surface in the background. Roots are seen penetrating to over a meter between the limestone rocks. When limestone is exposed for soil formation the carbonate is dissolved and a thin soil forms from either the siliceous mineral inclusions in the limestone or dust, or a combination of the two sources. Being of neutral or slightly basic reaction the soil is chemically fertile and usually supports grass vegetation. Organic carbon rich mollic epipedons commonly form in all soil material above the limestone. Although shallow and rocky these soils are often sought by subsistent farmers because of their natural fertility derived from the nutrient rich limestone but are of limited value for mechanized food crop production.
