Clearly, Bill was on some sort of high point above the city when he made this photograph. He mentioned three buildings of interest in the caption he wrote in his photo album.
The local headquarters of Okes Construction Company of St. Paul, Minnesota USA was the white building in the lower right. Okes was Bill’s initial employer when he reported to duty in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, to work as a laborer constructing the Alaska Highway.
The long building in the left front is the U.S. Army barracks. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers surveyed and completed a 2,700 kilometre (1,700 mi) pioneer road from Dawson Creek to Delta Junction, Alaska, in just eight months through uncharted wilderness! When it opened to military vehicles in November, 1942, the high included 133 major bridges and more than 8,000 culverts. It was a heroic accomplishment. In 1943, civilian contractors took over the finishing work on the road.
The railroad depot can be seen behind the barracks.
