Pongamia pinnata
Synonyms: Millettia pinnata, Pongamia glabra, Derris indica, Galedupa pinnata
Common names: Pongam Tree, Indian Beech Tree, Honge Tree, Panigrahi, karanja
It is native to humid and sub-tropic environments (Asia, West Africa, Australasia...), it is thought to have originated in India.
Pea flowers in inflorescences and large light-green deltoid (heart shaped) leaves.
Deciduous.
In Australia normally (!) flowers November-December
Its root, bark, leaves, sap, and flower also have medicinal properties and traditionally used as medicinal plants . Concentrated seeds extract can be found in various herbal preparations which are widely available in the market today.
In India the seeds are collected to obtain Karanja or Honge oil. The non-edible oil is known for its medicinal properties.
