The black rocks that line the shore at Kukio Beach provide good camouflage for the many thin-shelled rock crabs (Grapsus tenuicrustatus) like these that scamper around. I expected some of the larger waves to wash them off perches like this, but they somehow managed to keep their places. This arthropod is known in Hawai’ian as “a’ama”. The English common name is natal sally-light-foot crab. The a’ama inhabits rocky outcrops near beaches and tidepools and can reach lengths of 6-8 centimeters.
