This large hall shelters Phra Mongkhon Bophit, one of the most revered Buddha images in Ayutthaya. During the rule of King Phra Chao Sua in 1706, lightning struck the hall, knocking part of the Buddha’s head off. Restoration was performed during the reign of King Borommakot but the image was badly damaged again during the Burmese attack when the building was totally destroyed save a couple of partial pillars and a brick platform. Over the coming decades a new hall was erected, covering the original ruins.
Phra Mongkhon Bophit is 12.45 m and reaches 9.55 m across at the lap. Originally sculpted from plaster in the middle Ayutthaya period, it marks the spot of the royal family’s cremation site from 1612 to 1767.
