Four curved openings are isolated so tightly that the gallery wall becomes an abstract composition of black semicircles, white planes, and soft gray transitions. The photograph withholds the larger object, asking shape and shadow to explain the space instead. A horizontal seam bends through the center while vertical partitions interrupt the arcs, producing a geometry that feels both architectural and diagrammatic. Monochrome is essential: without color, the eye attends to depth, edge, and the subtle falloff of light inside each recess. The square Hasselblad frame gives the arrangement a measured stability, but the cropped curves imply continuation beyond it. At SFMOMA, where white walls usually serve as invisible support, this image makes the support condition itself visually active.
