Cape Banks.
Cape Banks lighthouse is only a couple of kms as the crow flies from Carpenter Rocks. It is the last man made structure before reaching Southend to the north. The lighthouse is near Lake Bonney and since 1997 it has been a part of Canunda National Park. The headland was named by Captain James Grant in 1800 after the British botanist. The lighthouse is unusual in SA as it is fourteen sided rather than round like other lighthouses. The only other lighthouse with fourteen sides in SA is at Cape Borda on Kangaroo Island. It was built in 1882 and first beamed out for shipping on 1 January 1883. It can be seen from about 19 kms from the coast. Two light keepers’ cottages were built at the same time as the lighthouse but when it was automated in 1928 that obviated the need for lighthouse keepers and their cottages were demolished. A major monument to the shipwreck of the Admella is located here.
Carpenter Rocks.
Both Captain Grant and French Captain Nicholas Baudin sailed along this coast in 1802. Grant named Cape Banks. In 1802 Baudin named the rocky coast with rocks and pebbles after the three carpenters on board to Geographe – Charpentiers which is known in English as Carpenters Rocks. The pastoral leasehold along the coast here which kept visitors from reaching the coast was Carratum run taken out by John Livingston. Parts of the run along the coast were resumed in 1862 to form the Hundred of Kongorong. A small fishing village emerged and it was not until the 1930s that it became a holiday place once a dirt road made the area accessible to motorists. The popular catch here was crayfish. The coast here was dangerous and eleven shipwrecks were recorded near Carpenter Rocks. They were the Nene Valley 1854; The Iron Age 1854; the Varoon 1856; the Admella 1859; the Flying Cloud 1870; the Geltwood 1876; the Edith Haviland 1877; the Helen 1882; the Aeolus 1894; the Lemael 1925; and the Corio 1951. The current fishing fleet based around Carpenter Rocks includes about 30 crayfish boats.
