La Cité de Carcassonne, sur la rive droite de l'Aude, a été classée au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO en 1997. C'est le haut lieu touristique de la ville, avec près de 4 millions de visiteurs chaque année, dont près de 500 000 visites du château comtal et des remparts173. C'est le deuxième site touristique le plus visité de France après le Mont-Saint-Michel.
