Features of Tyneside around Newcastle Castle. This is the Keep built between 1172 and 1177 during the reign of Henry II on the site of the 'new' castle of around 1080 built by Robert Curthose, elder son of William I / the Conqueror. Although separated by the railway viaduct that carries the East Coast Main Line, it is considered as part of the same structure as the 'Black Gate'. Earlier still this was the site of the fort that overlooked the Roman Pont Aelius (family name of Hadrian), the first bridge across the Tyne here and completed sometime in the 2nd century.
