A break at Skipton on route from London to Scotland, 8 April 2022. Boats on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. A day of sunshine and showers, some of sleet and at times of snow. This is the junction between the main line of the canal between Liverpool (left) and Leeds (right), with the Castle Arm straight ahead under the typical stone built bridge.
The Leeds & Liverpool Canal was the first trans-Pennine waterway to see construction started, with a 'first sod' turned on 5 November 1770, but by the time it was opened through in 1816 it had been beaten by both the Rochdale (1804 - officially) and Huddersfield Narrow (1811) canals.
