These are large colorful birds that can be seen in 1000's all over. They are always in flocks of more than 10 and this place had 100's. I like to shoot them in flight as they make up for good practice.
This is their breeding time and the half dry lakes and lake beds provide them with a perfect habitat for their little ones. In their pursuit of gathering food, they kill and consume other bird's chicks like Jacana's and Coots - mostly chicks which are only a few days old. Several photographers recently shared such pictures of Swamphens killing chicks in bird forums much to my shock and surprise - I didn't know they are also predators. I haven't seen such behavior though, but sighted Common Coots always chasing Swamphens away from their little ones.
