APLICACIÓN DE LA POLINIZACIÓN NATURAL EN CULTIVOS. APPLICATION OF THE NATURAL POLLINATION IN CULTIVATIONS. APPLICATION OF THE NATURAL POLLINATION IN CULTIVATIONS. The great interest in the study of the bumblebee like insect to pollinate comes determined by its employment inside the agriculture. To obtain a good crop, the flowers of the cultivation need to be pollinated. The pollen should come unfastened of the stamen and to make contact with the pistil, so that in the cultivation of the tomato he/she takes place a good pollination and a good fructification. Until some few years ago, the pollination was made manually with an electric vibrator. In certain cultivation areas, the fructification was stimulated with applications of hormones, directed to the flowers, being a heavy and very laborious work. Bees were also used, but these methods however presented a series of inconveniences: In general the bees don't work well inside the hothouses or inside the tunnels. They are generally less effective during the cold periods (<15 ºC) and cloudy times. The manual pollination demands a lot of time and it is difficult to manage it. The use of hormones often carries the production of fruits of smaller quality, not appropriate for the export (too soft, deformed fruits and without seeds). In 1987, it was observed as the bumblebees they could be a good alternative for this activity, being gotten more effectiveness in the pollination and in the fructification that with the manual vibration and the application of hormones. The employment of Bombus terrestris, contributes a very good alternative that assures a production of excellent tomatoes under plastic. An appropriate pollination is essential to assure a correct formation of the fruits and a good production. Compared with other insects to pollinate, as the bees, the bumblebees are more effective because they are bigger and they can visit a number bigger than plants for flight, that is to say, more flowers per minute (a stocking of 20-30), and they achieve a better contact with the stigma and the stamens. The climate has less influence in the behavior of the bumblebees than in other insects. The bumblebees stay active relatively to low temperatures (they gather food to 5º C) and with low intensity of light. However with extreme heat, they are not very active. The rain, the wind and the clouds have little influence in their activities. An important advantage of the bumblebees, above the bees, is the absence of a communication system. The melliferous bee informs her partners by means of the dance of the presence of a source of attractive food outside of the cultivation in which her pollination activities are required, and as a result the bees would leave the cultivation collectively toward the new place. The bumblebees don't have such a communication system. When an individual bumblebee finds a source of attractive food in another part, he cannot inform his partners, so that the other bumblebees will continue working in the crop in which their services are required.
