This vista greets you at an entrance to the Great Hall of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan. Entitled with apologies to The Postal Service.
This was pried out of my archives by museum shots from f Ch, such as this, this, and this. Sweet shots of the Great Hall on flickr include those by Weimin Liu, Farl, and Dan Tsai.
Richard Morris Hunt designed the Great Hall in the 1890s, but did not live to see this view. His son, Richard oversaw its completion with his dad's specs.
At that time, electric lights were new technology and were not available for installation on a ceiling such as this. On the upper left of this photo, out of view behind the entrance frame, a grand skylight is the primary source of light. Electric spotlights added to the ceiling long since the 1890s provide almost inconsequential light and offend its timeless grace.
I have experimented recently with shopping out bits I'd rather were not there. In a shot of Knitta fiti under Seattle Monorail track, I shopped out tree branches. They were distractions that wouldn't be missed and the Seattle gray sky was more iconic without them.
Here I deleted all except one of the ceiling lights. The remaining light is both my comment on their futility and a reflection of my ambivalence over shopping out reality. I will also add the tag shopd to shopped graphics (obvious) and photos (not always obvious).
